Charles Russell Brown, affectionately known to all as “Skippy,” of Amherst, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, May 8, 2026, at the age of 84.
A devoted family man and a visionary leader, Skippy’s life was defined by an inexhaustible enthusiasm for people. As a self-made entrepreneur, he didn’t just build businesses; he built connections that served as the heartbeat of his community. Through “Charlie’s Chicken” in Amherst, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Harrisonburg; and “Skippy’s Waffle and Burger House,” he provided more than a meal, he provided a gathering place where neighbors felt like family.
His entrepreneurial reach extended into every facet of local life. From the chairs of “Brown’s Barber Shop” to the aisles of “Skippy’s Jiffy Mart”, he offered mentorship and a listening ear to generations of patrons. Through “B&B Enterprises”, his construction company, he contributed to the region’s physical growth, always emphasizing quality and integrity in every project. B&B built homes, installed galvanized pipe lines, and worked on the development of the 460 bypass. While on the tennis court, Skippy served as an instructor, teaching the values of discipline and sportsmanship to the young and old alike. His businesses were his ministry, used as mechanisms to provide employment, support local initiatives, and ensure that every customer left with a sense of satisfaction and respect.
Skippy was a lifelong member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He humbly and quietly supported expansion projects, youth initiatives, and reached out to members near and far. He has always been especially fond of his church and his church family.
Skippy was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Louis Brown and Thelma Jordan Brown, and his sister, Blanche Juanita Brown Holland. Those left to carry on his legacy and memories are his wife, Phyllis Braxton Brown; his children, Pastor Kelvin R. Brown (Francine) and Sherri B. Rose; and his brother, Carl J. “Buddy” Brown. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Andre Lynch (Christina), Derrick Brown (Payton Jones), Luther Rose (Giovanna), Kyle Brown, and Shannelle Rose; and seven great- grandchildren.
Skippy’s affection was steadfast and loyal, greatly impacting the lives of many along his courageous journey. He leaves behind a vast circle of dear friends and relatives who will forever remember him as a kindhearted, compassionate, and gentle soul whose work made his community a better place to live.
