" Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

Dennis Ray Kinney, affectionately known as “Kane” within the community, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Carilion Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. He was born on November 21, 1952, at Virginia Baptist Hospital to the late Lacey and Beatrice (Robinson) Kinney.

After attending Dunbar High School, Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He later pursued his passion for the martial arts, becoming a Master whose discipline and skill inspired those around him.

Family Trivia Moment: The nickname “Kane/Caine” may have derived from Kwai Chang Caine of the TV series Kung Fu, or perhaps from Kane Kosugi, an American martial artist and actor. He loved to keep everyone guessing — and in doing so, he brought laughter, joy, and entertainment to all who knew him.

Though he lived a humble life, Dennis gave generously of what he had. His willingness to share and his open heart left a lasting impact on everyone blessed to cross his path.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Douglas (Doug) Kinney and Donald (DD) Kinney, and his sister Patricia (PK) Kinney.

Dennis leaves to cherish and celebrate his memory a devoted sister, Myrtle Woods (James) of Hampton, VA; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Thompson and Debora Kinney, both of Lynchburg, VA; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.

The family of Dennis “Kane” Kinney wishes to lovingly acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of sympathy, kindness, and support shown during this time of loss. Special thanks are extended to Carilion Memorial Hospital, Lynchburg General Hospital and to the staff at Salem VA Health and Rehab for their compassionate care. May God richly bless you all.

"A Silent Tear"

Just close your eyes and you will see All the memories that you have of me Just sit and relax and you will find I’m really still there inside your mind Don’t cry for me now I’m gone For I am in the land of song There is no pain, there is no fear So dry away that silent tear Don’t think of me in the dark and cold For here I am, no longer old I’m in that place that’s filled with love Known to you all, as “UP ABOVE”.

A service will be on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg at 3pm with a visitation one hour prior.
