Thelma Louise "Lou" Cardwell

Listen to Obituary

Thelma Louise Cardwell, affectionately known as “Lou”, peacefully departed this life, surrounded by loved ones on September 13, 2025, at her place of residence. She was born on February 20, 1940, in Lynchburg, VA to Viola and Albert Anderson, both of whom preceded her in death.

Growing up in Lynchburg, she graduated from Dunbar High School, shaping a foundation for a life steeped in faith, family, and service. She went on to receive a certificate in geriatric nursing where she pursued her passion for healthcare. She took great pride in providing care for older adults and their families and developing individualized care plans based on patients’ needs.

Her early years were marked by close family ties, the days of small-town living, and a blossoming faith in God, which would guide her throughout her days. She was a devoted Christian of apostolic faith and a proud member of her church choir, uplifting countless hearts with her beautiful and anointed singing voice. Her voice filled with devotion and warmth uplifted many as she encouraged those around her to keep the faith even in difficult times.

Louise enjoyed gardening, plants, flowers, sewing, and reading a good book. She planted different types of squash, zucchini, and tomatoes. She loved sewing so much that she made beautiful garments for her children and taught them the basics of sewing as well. Her favorite past time was watching tennis, basketball, football, and golf – not to mention a good ole fashion western. Those who knew her will remember her for her unwavering love, her gentle and kind spirit, and her ability to make others feel like family.

Louise married the love of her life, Joe Cardwell, Sr., with whom she shared 53 wonderful years of steadfast companionship until his passing. Together they built a nurturing home filled with music, laughter, ping pong tournaments, board games, and values of kindness, respect, and generosity. She knew how to give that certain look to straighten us out in an instant, whenever we would misbehave or show off. That was the love of our beautiful mother. She was a woman of God, always praying and studying the word. As a devoted mother to six children, Tania Jones (James), who preceded her in death, and Katrina Tune, Deva Baugh (Derek), Joe Cardwell (Elvira), Sarita Cardwell, and Roman Cardwell.

Louise found her greatest pride in her family, always providing unwavering support and unconditional love – not to mention, a generously prepared care package when one least expects it from time to time. JUST BECAUSE.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Marjorie Lawson, Mary Chukwu, and Vivian Fulton; brother, William Anderson (Nancy); sisters-in-law, Joyce K. Thompson, Nancy Anderson, and Anne Hull.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Edith Ford (Bobby); brothers, Nathaniel, Joseph V., and Sydney Anderson; daughter, Tania Jones (James); and great nephew, Eaun Saunders.

Her memory will be cherished by her children, and she leaves behind six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Sunday, September 21, 2025 at 3:00 PM.
